What does “Anmeldung” mean?
AnmeldungEnglish: address registration
In short
Registering your address with the city. You must do it within two weeks of moving into a flat in Karlsruhe, and it is free.
The Anmeldung is the key that opens everything else. After you register you get a Meldebestätigung, which banks and employers ask for, and your Steuer-ID comes by post a few weeks later.
In Karlsruhe you register in person at any Bürgerbüro, with an appointment. If you moved from elsewhere in Germany and your ID card has the online function turned on, you can register online instead.
